Every where I look these days I see eyes, evil eyes as they are called in our store or “evil eye charms.” Watching some of the popular shows these days on TV you see many people wearing them. What is the evil eye?
The “evil eye” is a look that is believed by many cultures to be able to cause injury or bad luck for the person at whom it is directed for reasons of envy or dislike. The term also refers to the power attributed to certain persons of inflicting injury or bad luck by such an envious or ill-wishing look. Source: Wikipedia
Most cultures have something like this, but these days the charms to ward off this evil eye have become very popular. At N.J. Diamonds we have sold these evil eye charms since the day we opened our doors. People bought these as a very small charm to give to the parents of new-born baby’s. These little charms were put on a safety-pin and pinned to the clothes of the baby to ward off the “evil eye.” Then we started getting them in the store as adult charms in 18kt yellow gold first and then in 18kt white gold. Some have eye lashes some with C.Z. stones always with a blue eye in the middle. We have even gotten them in the store with diamonds and mother of pearl.
This past year saw eye beads made into bracelets. We have seen eye earrings, eye rings, and 18kt eye bracelets made of the eye charm lined up to make a bracelet. Now you can find the glass or plastic eye beads in many colors. Teen age girls wear these bracelets of different colors stacked. I can not tell you the demand for the earrings or how fast they are sold when we get them in the store. How many woman are looking for sets that include earrings, bracelet, ring and pendant. The explosion of “evil eye” jewelry has taken me by surprise because we have sold these for so long. The younger generation thinks they have discovered something new that us older folks just do not get. Little do they know this has been for the ages. Believe or not in the power of the “EVIL EYE” the jewelry that is be made these days is very beautiful and fun. Every day we are finding new way’s that the “eye” is being put on charms. There are charms that have the eye moving from side to side. We do not have 14kt or 10kt eye jewelry we do carry eye charms in silver, 18kt white and yellow gold and 21kt. We have the “Evil Eye” bead bracelets in several colors.
